Voter Registration Information



To vote in the Scottsboro Municipal Elections on Tuesday, August 25, a voter must be registered in the State of Alabama. A voter must establish residency by July 26 to vote in the municipal election. Our campaign has two convenient options for you to Register to Vote! Voter registration must be completed by August 10 to vote in the Aug. 25 election.

If you are a current resident of Alabama, you may register online through the Secretary of State's website. Select the Register Online option below or visit www.alabamavotes.gov to complete the online registration process.

You may also download a printable Voter Registration Form. The online may be completed and printed, then mailed to the Jackson County Board of Registrars. Follow the instructions on the form and return the completed form to:

Voters may also use the form to update their voter information or they may visit the Jackson County Board of Registrars office in person inside the Jackson County Courthouse. For hours and additional information, please call 256-574-9339.

Absentee Voting Information



The information below will provide you with important dates, how to apply for an absentee ballot and where you can get an application, including how you need to return the application for an absentee ballot. To vote using an absentee ballot, you must first apply for a ballot through the Scottsboro City Clerk. You may call the City Clerk at 256-912-0502 for additional information.

An application for an absentee ballot may be applied for now, however, the City Clerk may only mail an absentee ballot after July 28. Once you receive your ballot, follow the instructions for completing and returning the ballot.

Below are important dates to remember when voting absentee.



Tuesday, August 10





Last day a voter can register to vote in the Scottsboro Municipal Election on Tuesday, Aug. 25.​


Thursday, August 20





Last day a voter can apply for a regular absentee ballot.​


Monday, August 24





Last day a voter can apply for and submit an emergency absentee ballot.


Last day a voter can hand-deliver an absentee ballot to the City Clerk.


Last day a voter can postmark an absentee ballot (must be received by noon the day of the election.)​



Tuesday, August 25





Election Day at the Scottsboro Rec-Com from 7am-7pm.


If a runoff is necessary, it will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6. This page will be updated with revised dates for voter registration and applying for an absentee ballot for the runoff election.



HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ABSENTEE BALLOT



Apply In-Person

Voters choosing to voter by absentee ballot must complete and return an application. Voters may apply in-person at Scottsboro City Hall through the City Clerk. The application may only be delivered in-person by the applicant. Valid photo identification required. The City Clerk is located at Scottsboro City Hall, 316 S Broad Street in Scottsboro.


Apply By Mail

Voters who already have an application may return it to the City Clerk by U.S. Mail or commercial carrier. Only one application may be mailed per envelope. Must include a copy of your valid photo identification.

Printable Application for Municipal Absentee Ballot



A Voter may cast an Absentee Ballot if He or She:



- Expects to be absent from the country on election day

- Is ill or has a physical disability that prevents a trip to the polling place

- Is a registered Alabama voter living outside the country, such as a member of the armed forces, a voter employed outside the United States, a college student, or a spouse or child of such a person

- Is an appointed election official or poll watcher at a polling place other than his or her regular polling place

- Expects to work a required shift, 10-hours or more, that coincides with polling hours

- Is a caregiver for a family member to the second degree of kindship by affinity or consanguinity and the family member is confined to his or her home

- Is currently incarcerated in prison or jail and has not been convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude



Emergency Rule for COVID-19



On June 25, 2020, Secretary of State John Merrill adopted an emergency rule for absentee voting for the 2020 municipal elections.

The emergency rule authorizes any qualified voter who determines it is impossible or unreasonable to vote at their polling place for the 2020 municipal election and runoff due to the declared state of emergency, to check the box on the absentee ballot application which reads: "I have a physical illness or infirmity which prevents my attendance at the polls."

Applications for absentee ballots are required, along with valid photo identification.



Emergency Absentee Voting



Applications can be made after the absentee deadline for Emergency Absentee Voting, but no later than 5pm on the day before the election, if a voter:

- Is required by an employer under unforeseen circumstances to be unavailable at the polls on the day of the election

- Is a caregiver of a person who requires emergency treatment by licensed physician within five days before an election

- Has a family member to the second degree of kindship by affinity or consanguinity die within five days before an election



Medical Emergency Absentee Voting



Applications can be made by a voter who has a medical emergency requiring treatment from a licensed physician within 5 days of an election. During that 5 day period, the medical emergency absentee ballot application and the voted absentee ballot must be returned no later than noon on the day the election is held. The medical emergency absentee ballot application requires that the attending physician describe and certify the circumstances as constituting an emergency. The voter may designate someone to turn in the medical emergency absentee ballot application, receive the absentee ballot on behalf of the voter, and return the voted absentee ballot to the City Clerk on behalf of the voter.​
